Many horse owners struggle with giving oral medications or paste dewormers to their horses. In this video, Sina Parsaye, DVM, of Colorado, walks us through giving these products to a horse. He demonstrates with a dose syringe that many of us have used to dissolve pills for oral medications. It also is close to the size of a tube of paste dewormer.

Oral Medications Step by Step
Parsaye said to begin the process of giving oral products by standing beside your haltered horse. He warned owners to stay clear of the front legs and the head. Some horses resist by striking or moving around. Other horses toss their heads. That act like a battering ram if your horse’s head hits you!
Slowly insert the tip of the syringe into the side of the horse’s mouth. Then, slowly elevate the horse’s head with your hand under its chin.
Administer the oral medications or dewormer. Make sure to keep the horse’s head elevated until all of the medication or dewormer has been ingested.
Final Words
Parsaye said if you feel uncomfortable or cannot stay safe while giving your horse oral medications or dewormer, call your primary care veterinarian.
