Besides his MA, VetMB, MVetMed, and PhD, London-based Edward Knowles (known as “Edd”) holds a DECEIM and an MRCVS. In addition, he is an RCVS-recognized specialist in Equine Internal Medicine.

He has two part-time roles at present: as a postdoctoral researcher in Comparative Neuromuscular Disease at the Royal Veterinary College and as a specialist in Equine Internal Medicine at Bell Equine Veterinary Clinic (CVS Group plc).

Knowles’ primary clinical and research interest is equine metabolic disease. His doctoral research revealed the strength of insulin dysregulation as a risk factor for laminitis in clinical practice. Through this research, he developed a thorough understanding of statistical methods in epidemiology and statistical analysis using R and SPSS software.

He is interested in the clinical application of laboratory tests. Through his postdoctoral research and advisory work for Axiom Veterinary Laboratory, Knowles has developed LCMS assays, evaluated assay performance, established reference intervals, and introduced additional tests to the laboratory portfolio. He has practical experience performing and evaluating LCMS assays, radio-immunoassays, ELISAs, and automated immunometric and spectrophotometric assays.

Besides his postdoctoral research, Knowles has continued to undertake clinical research through several new projects. These include further study into equine metabolic disease and an epidemiological and welfare-related study of equine PPID. He currently holds research grants from MSD Animal Health, Morris Animal Foundation, and CVS Group plc.

In addition, Knowles teaches and supervises a team of recently graduated veterinary surgeons at Bell Equine and visiting veterinary students. He also supervises and assists with RVC and Nottingham University student clinical research projects.

Knowles provides CPD teaching on a broad range of equine medical topics in the U.K. and abroad at conferences (such as the British Equine Veterinary Association Congress and the London Vet Show) and through commercial providers such as VetPD.
