In this video, Dr. Christine Johnson shows us how to safely examine a horse’s eye. She also discusses what to look for.
What to Look For
If you suspect a horse has something wrong with its eye, you should look for the following signs:
- Look for squinting to see if the horse is holding its eye open or if it is half-shut.
- Look for swelling in or around the eye and membranes.
- Look for excessive tearing.
- Look for blood in or around the eye.
- Look for cloudiness in the eye.
Make sure to compare the eyes and notice any differences. Check to see if one eye is more abnormal than the other.
Final Words
If you have concerns about your horse’s eyes or vision, contact your veterinarian. Eyes can be an emergency, so don’t wait if you have concerns. Horses can be ‘touchy’ about their eyes, so learn how to safely examine your horse’s eye. Ask your veterinarian if you have questions.
