Clare Barfoot graduated from The University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom after studying Animal Science, having shown a lifelong passion for animals, especially horses.
Since she was born into a horse-mad family, horses and ponies have always been central to Barfoot’s life. She started her career as a pig and poultry nutritionist where she learned her craft, formulating nutritional products and designing diets before moving to Mars Horsecare, owners of the SPILLERS™ brand. This gave her the perfect opportunity to combine her love for horses with her passion for nutrition.
Barfoot is one of only a handful of registered equine nutritionists in the U.K. In her role as marketing and R&D director, she oversees the nutritional management and marketing of all of Mars Horsecare UK’s products and services. She works very closely with Professor Pat Harris to help steer the Waltham Equine Studies Group’s research program. For this, she has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers on equine nutrition and management, with a particular interest in laminitis and senior horses.
In addition to her role at Mars, Barfoot has owned horses most of her life. She currently has a Welsh Section D that she describes as a “pocket rocket.” She is committed to furthering our knowledge about caring for older horses and ponies appropriately while providing them with nutrition that enhances their well-being. Having owned two horses into their 30s, Barfoot knows how important myseniorhorse.com is to this mission.
